March 24th, 11 am: On a Workshop: “A Scholarship of Audiovision: Theory/Praxis/Production in the 21st Century,” organized and chaired by Brigitta Wagner (Indiana University, Bloomington). Jan 26-29, 2012: Conference on Acting in Film, Theater and Dance at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. Giving a presentation on the changing performance style of Al Jolson as he moved from live theater to sound films.
Dec 9-11, 2011: Conference at University of Stockholm on documentary film: PALPABLE REALITIES: Documentary Practices from Brodsky to Morris. I showed an almost finished cut of Errol Morris: A Lightning Sketch, presenting a paper on Morris and hopefully talking some about the fruitful interactions between filmmaking and scholarship.
Dec 4: Conference at NYU on Chinese Documentary: GETTING THE PAST OUT LOUD: Memory Projects with Wu Wenguang. I was in the audience. I show a couple of Wu’s documentaries in my World Documentary course and I was excited to meet him.
Dec 2-3: Conference and Screenings at Yale University: Remnants of Utopia: European Film, ca. 1975. Introducing two Agnes Varda films and on a panel about The Status of Feminism with colleagues Katie Trumpener and Moira Fradinger.
Nov 3-6: Conference on The Impact of Technological Innovations on the Historiography and Theory of Cinema at the Cinémathèque Quebecoise in Montreal, Canada. My presentation: “When Did Cinema Become Cinema?: Problems in Historiography and Theory,”
Oct 1-8: at the Giorante del Cinema Muto in Pordenone, Italy, watching films and talking cinema over Aperol Spritz. OK it’s hard work but somebody has to do it. I mean not everyone wants to watch 12 hours of silent film a day for 8 days.
Sept 15: Presentation of An American Potter at the opening of the “Gerry Williams Retrospective,” Colby-Sawyer College (New London, NH).
August 11-14: Visible Evidence 18 at New York University, NYC. Presented Errol Morris: A Lightning Sketch.
June 17-19: with “The Iraq Experience:Four Films of Petra Epperlein and Mike Tucker” at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, New Haven, CT. I presented a paper “The Prisoner and Other Documentaries on Abu Ghraib as well as a short documentary piece of a larger, forthcoming documentary: The Iraq Experience.
