{"id":2593,"date":"2015-10-18T13:27:57","date_gmt":"2015-10-18T13:27:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/?p=2593"},"modified":"2015-10-21T14:27:30","modified_gmt":"2015-10-21T14:27:30","slug":"pordenone-silent-film-festival-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/?p=2593","title":{"rendered":"Pordenone Silent Film Festival 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have stopped posting on this website for quite some time.\u00a0 As with so many of my colleagues, the problem is really one of time.\u00a0 I am finishing a book that I hope to get out for the 2016 election.\u00a0 It is entitled <em>Politicking and Emergent Media: US Presidential Elections<\/em> of the 1890s. (Note: get a copy for the course.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2625\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BB_SheriffsKid1913.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2625\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2625\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/BB_SheriffsKid1913-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Broncho Billy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Broncho Billy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Some westerns, programmed by Richard Abel, enabled me to understand what Broncho Billy Anderson was all about.\u00a0 He stood out as a star, but even more impressive were the stories&#8211;Broncho Billy moves West and becomes the sheriff.\u00a0 His old friend and rival for his wife&#8217;s affections shows up.\u00a0 While BB is off chasing a criminal, the man tries to seduce her.\u00a0 Although the man&#8217;s attentions are rejected, they are depicted quite extensively, ending in a confrontation.\u00a0 In another one-reeler, BB steals some money to save the life of his best friend.\u00a0 When they both romance the same girl and it seems she prefers BB, the friend reveals the crime and sends BB to prison.\u00a0 When our hero finally gets out he vows revenge but then discovers the woman happy with husband and child.\u00a0 BB relents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2638\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/SHERLOCK_021.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2638\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2638\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/SHERLOCK_021-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"William Gilette as Sherlock Holmes\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/SHERLOCK_021-300x227.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/SHERLOCK_021-1024x773.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/SHERLOCK_021.jpg 1960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2638\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Gilette as Sherlock Holmes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another unexpected pleasure was seeing the talented stage actor William Gillette in <em>Sherlock Holmes<\/em> (1916).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2629\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/MOLLYCODDLE_011.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2629\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/MOLLYCODDLE_011-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Mollycoddle \" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Mollycoddle<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I could go on: <em>The Mollycoddle<\/em> with Douglas Fairbanks has that kind of transformation from naive and incapable to naive and brilliant that Buster Keaton would establish as his trade mark.\u00a0 Hmm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2630\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RAMONA_04.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2630\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2630\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/RAMONA_04-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dolores del Rio as Ramona\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dolores del Rio as Ramona<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And <em>Ramona<\/em> (1928) with Ramona Diaz was an unexpected surprise in which the brutality to Native Americans and Mexican Americans is depicted with surprising (and disturbing) explicitness.<\/p>\n<p>Or the various World War I documentaries, including several Italian documentaries shot in the Alps as the Italians fought the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and <i>On the \u00a0Firing Line with the Germans<\/i>\u00a0(1915) by Wilbur H. Durborough. Or perhaps it was just relaxing with so many good friends (and good wine)&#8211;an escape from the ongoing craziness of my university.<\/p>\n<p>So this year I offer a few photos taken with the
