Part I: Academia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was in the Philippines for five weeks this summer&#8211;easily my longest stay (in fact, I unintentionally overstayed my visa and was heavily fined!).\u00a0 So the trip had three major components:<\/p>\n<p>No.1:\u00a0 I further developed my connections with Filipino film culture, giving two different talks on early cinema in the Philippines.\u00a0 The first was at University of San Carlos in Cebu, an event that was largely organized by Misha Anissimov along with his colleague and (just about) NYU Ph.D. Paul Grant.\u00a0 A few of you may have seen the poster on Facebook, but here it is again:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/PosterUnivofSanCarlos.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1755\" alt=\"Poster,UnivofSanCarlos\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/PosterUnivofSanCarlos-1024x614.jpeg\" width=\"627\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/PosterUnivofSanCarlos-1024x614.jpeg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/PosterUnivofSanCarlos-300x180.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/PosterUnivofSanCarlos.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a>I got some good-natured ribbing from friends.\u00a0\u00a0Samantha Solidum, who designed the poster, chose a photo from my website for the poster.\u00a0 Someone suggested it was from 20 years ago.\u00a0 If only: it was taken it Los Angeles while I was working on Hearts and Minds.<br \/>\nAs it turned out, the first film that most of the students saw for their film studies course of study was my documentary <em>Before the Nickelodeon<\/em>.\u00a0 So after I finished my presentation and we had a question and answer period, I assumed the event had concluded and it was time for dinner.\u00a0 But no one left.\u00a0 Now it was time for the really important part of the evening: the photo ops.\u00a0 (For the uninformed, photo ops are a crucial element of Filipino culture.) We began with a group portrait (here is one of many, many versions of this moment).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MusserAtUniversityofSanCarlos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1758\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>Cebu film culture is undergoing a remarkable revival.\u00a0 University of San Carlos has started an MA program in Film Studies&#8211;and is thinking about a Ph.D.\u00a0 Cebuano filmmaking of the independent variety is also flourishing.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of film culture is one of the things shared by the Philippines and the United States.\u00a0 For instance, we are the only two countries that elected movie stars as presidents.<\/p>\n<p>Manilla\/Quezon City is the traditional center of Filipino film culture, with University of the Philippines-Dilman the intellectual center.\u00a0 My friend and colleague Nick Deocampo&#8211;mine and Threese&#8217;s <em>shadkhn<\/em>) now teaches there and arranged a reprise in the School of Mass Communication. \u00a0 Indeed, it was because of Nick that I wrote this paper some years ago (and soon to be published in his book).\u00a0 It was a smaller crowd but had its opportunity to make the NYU-Filipino film connection as I met Benedict \u201cBono\u201d Olgado, the first head of the National Film Archive of the Philippines and an NYU graduate:<\/p>\n<div
