Regretably I am writing about it months after the festival ended.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">I became a Pordenone <em>regular <\/em>some years ago\u2013\u2013specifically in October 2007. Don&#8217;t get me wrong; I had missed very few Giornates del Cinema Muto since the mid 1990s, but my son John Carlos was slightly less than a year old.\u00a0 I thought I should be a good husband, a good father\u2013-and stay home.\u00a0 But none of my Yale colleagues were going.\u00a0 And Silent Cinema really is my portfolio.\u00a0 There were German silents, about which I needed to learn more.\u00a0 Threese encouraged me to go&#8211;and so I went.\u00a0 And I saw E. A. Dupont&#8217;s <em>The Ancient Law<\/em> (1923), a key film that enabled me to finally write a long wished for essay on <em>The Jazz Singer<\/em>.\u00a0 In addition they screened some very early Passion Play films, shot in Palestine in the 1890s. \u00a0 It was a great year, but I didn&#8217;t know that until I was there.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pordenone-2012-019.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1391\" alt=\"Pordenone 2012 019\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pordenone-2012-019-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pordenone-2012-019-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Pordenone-2012-019-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Now I don&#8217;t bother to look at the program.\u00a0 I just go.\u00a0 In 2012, once again, there was serendipity.\u00a0 I was writing an essay for <em>Film History<\/em> entitled &#8220;Conversions and Convergences: Sarah Bernhardt in the Era of Technological Reproducibility, 1910-1913.&#8221; And the Giornate showed Bernhardt&#8217;s first motion picture: a brief excerpt of the duel scene from <i>Hamlet<\/i> (1900), made for the Phono-Cinema-Theatre at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1393\" style=\"width: 637px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BenhardtsHamletonScreen.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1393\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1393\" alt=\"Sarah Bernhardt in the duel scene from Hamlet (1900).\" src=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BenhardtsHamletonScreen-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"627\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BenhardtsHamletonScreen-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.charlesmusser.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/BenhardtsHamletonScreen-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah Bernhardt in the duel scene from <em>Hamlet<\/em> (1900).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">It was in color and wonderful condition.\u00a0 And I saw it in the context of almost two dozen other Phono-Cinema films, many with recorded sound tracks from the period.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The greatest surprise and perhaps the greatest pleasure of the week was my discovery of Anna Stein, the Soviet film star of the late 1920s, who had a brief career in Germany then moved on to the US where Goldwyn tried to boost her career&#8211;but failed.
